House of Mystery Radio on NBC

By KM Rockwood

Amid the sounds of crashing thunder and shrieks of terror, the listeners are ushered into “the House of Mystery.”

Alan R. Warren hosts this eclectic radio broadcast five evenings a week.

Here is its beginnings and history in Alan’s own words:

“So, as for the House of Mystery, it all started back in 2012 when I had been producing two other shows for two different radio stations for other hosts when I got the opportunity to interview the woman who was having an affair with Lee Harvey Oswald during the same time that he had assassinated President Kenn(e)dy. She was particular about who she talked with at the time and, for some reason, felt comfortable with me.

“I spent over two hours talking with her, and we completed the interview. It got played in a few different cities and then placed on a podcast. At that time, podcasts were not as popular as they are now, but this interview did really well on both platforms. Soon after that, some of the different stations offered me a job doing my own show.

“Comic books have influenced the House of Mystery for years. As a kid, all I read were comics centered around mystery, ghosts, and unsolved mysteries or crimes. Each room in the House would cover a different topic. When the show first started, I was only on air one day a week, and I began with mysteries from true stories. The JFK Assassination, Zodiac Murders, or D.B. Cooper. Things that had happened in the past produced several questions among the population. We would interview guests who were writers, producers of documentaries, witnesses, or people involved somehow, such as a detective.

“As the show grew and was picked up on more stations, I would open up other rooms in the House or cover different categories. Things such as the paranormal, UFOs, Space & Science, and Conspiracy Theories were covered. When covid hit, and we all began recording the show from our homes, I decided to open up to other categories, including Fiction. Crime, Mystery, Horror, Historical, and more. All the different categories are now on the website, which we have looked (at) like a streaming service for television and movies (Netflix, Prime, etc.)

“My cohosts have all come from me meeting them during an interview or book show. I like to have people experienced in a particular genre of writing, and they sit in on the matching interviews. All of the hosts are also on the webpage.

“We take a different angle of interviewing than most, I like to have a few laughs and get to know more about the writer, and not take the typical route and ask the same old questions. We do cover writing and the theory behind it as well, but we prefer to find out the personal aspects of writing with which the writer was speaking.”

When Judy Penz Sheluk rolled out her latest anthology, Larceny and Last Chances, she arranged for several of us authors to be interviewed on House of Mystery by Alan and his co-host, David North-Martino.

They are skilled hosts, and bring out interesting aspects of the books and authors they feature. It was a struggle to connect to the meeting and actually got the audio turned on, but I managed.
