David B Schlosser suggested a writing exercise. He wrote that Nelson Algren born in 3/28/ 09 had three rules for living. :
Never play cards with a man named Doc.
Never eat at a place named Mom’s.
Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own.
Schlosser suggested that you write the rules for living of your protagonist. With all the hard work already done, I had an idea. Turn the exercise into a contest. Here it is. Put up the rules for living of your protagonist on this blog and add a link to where readers can buy your book. Everyone who posts wins! I stole the idea first so I get to post first.
In Murder Manhattan Style available at http://www.warrenbull.com/ The hero of the short story, “The Wrong Man,” has the following rules for living:
Don’t bend over in the shower just because someone asks you to pick up the soap.
If you’re not cheating, you’re not really trying to win.
Spend your money on women and drink: don’t waste it.
Okay, it’s your turn now.
Unfortunately, Chesapeake Crimes: This Job Is Murder, published by Wildside Press, which includes "Lucky in Death," my short story--isn't due for release until 5/20. But, when it is released, it can be found in many places--the publisher, B & N or Amazon where it and the prior Chesapeake Crimes volumes can be found.

Skeet Bannion's the protagonist, and her three rules for living are:

Abraham Lincoln from ABRAHAM LINCOLN FOR THE DEFENSE
ReplyDelete“If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.”
“You wish me to destroy my enemies? By making them friends do I not destroy them as enemies?”
When as president Lincoln was asked by a long-term friend to provide him with a high government post he mused, “Well now I never thought he had more than average ability when we were young men together. But then I suppose he thought the same thing about me, and — here I am.”

Abraham Lincoln from DEATH IN THE MOONLIGHT
ReplyDelete“With malice toward none and justice toward all.”
“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.”
When as president Lincoln heard a clergyman announce, ”The Lord is on our side,” Lincoln replied. “I am not at all concerned with that, for we know The Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on The Lord’s side.”
