a walk for sunshine

                                                   A WALK FOR SUNSHINE

I just finished a book my sister Suzanne gave to me " A WALK FOR SUNSHINE by Jeff Alt. It was a fascinating book for me to read because it was a true story oof the author Jeff Alt walking the whole Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Mt. Kathadin in Maine, a 2160 mile journey. He hiked it for charity for Sunshine Homes where his brother Aaron was living. Aaron was born with cerebral palsy and intellectual problems.

Also, I found it interesting because my sister and her teenagers started hiking it, too, in Shenandoah National Park quite a few years ago. We continued the following year, too, with our brother and our Washington State sister and her husband as well as nephews. We also in later years hiked it a little further north as we were heading for New England.

Would I like to hike parts of it again? I'd like to, but I know I'm getting too old to hike very far on that trail. I do my hiking closer to home in my woods or a trail that is a few miles from where I live.

Do you think you'd like to hike the Appalachian Trail?
Do you hike much on any trail?

  1. We live near the Appalachian Trail, frequently driving by it and seeing hikers stocking up in some of the stores. My daughters used to hike in far enough to camp at one of the shelters, and my son-in-law takes his dogs for an almost daily trek along the trail.

I never much liked hiking--I always got tired, especially on uphill portions, and could never figure out how some people could keep going for long stretches. Then, in my late 60's, I was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect that greatly reduced my oxygen level. It explains so many of the little problems I've had my entire life!

  2. KM I'm sorry you have the heart problems that kept you from hiking even part of the trail. At least your daughter was able to camp at one of the shelters, and your son-in-law can walk his dogs there. It's something I would like to do although. What little amount I did in Shenandoah National Park was enjoyable. I have to admit, I'm not fond of uphill hikes either.

  3. I like to hike, and we had access to the Trail in Georgia, but when we lived there I was busy standing on the sidelines for the year round sports my kids played. On my life list.

  4. Margaret I hope you get to hike at least part of it sometime. I like to hike, too, but my woods isn't very large so I don't get a long hike in. Also, over winter a lot of trees were blown down which covered up my trails. I'm hoping when my sisters read this book we'll plan on going back to a section of the trail. Of course, we do hike on trails in Pennsylvania which isn't far from us, and they are good trails, too.

  5. I like hiking but I've never done anything longer than a few days on the trail. My husband and younger daughter love hiking - they can go for hours! I think the AT is definitely something they'd like to do someday. I'm going to get a copy of this book for my husband. Thank you for telling us about it, Gloria.
