November: A Month of Change, Celebration, and Writing by Teresa Inge

November is a month of transition. The vibrant days of fall peak across the United States early in the month and begin to fade away to winter as temperatures cool, daylight hours grow shorter, and the holiday season comes into view.

Although winter officially begins in late December, many people see November as the season of gratitude and celebration.

Weather and Seasonal Changes

November often brings the year's first frost, earlier sunsets, and dressing for cooler temps. But in some years, a brief period of unusually warm weather occurs in the middle of the month, offering a final taste of fall before winter arrives.

The month is the eleventh on our calendar and has 30 days. Its name comes from the Latin word novem, meaning "nine," because it was the ninth month in the ancient Roman calendar.

Holidays and Traditions

Several notable holidays and observances take place during November, including Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Black Friday. The month is also associated with harvest celebrations and family gathering traditions.

November and Writers

November has long been a favorite month for writers. For many years, it was associated with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), a global challenge that encouraged participants to write 50,000 words during the month.

Although the NaNoWriMo organization ended in 2025, the tradition continues through a variety of writing challenges. New opportunities include programs offered by ProWritingAid for Novel November which is the NaNoWriMo official successor, AutoCrit Novel 90, Reedsy Novel Sprint, and other writing communities.

This year, I registered for the Sisters in Crime November Marathon, scheduled during the entire month. The marathon helps members meet their personal goals by allowing them to choose what works best for their projects. Participants can write, outline, revise, or edit novels, short stories, blogs, and other works while tracking progress through word counts, hours spent writing, or events attended.

A Month of Reflection and Renewal

Whether through holiday gatherings, community traditions, or creative pursuits, November encourages us to reflect on the year, appreciate what we have accomplished, and prepare for the season ahead. It is a month that celebrates both gratitude and growth, making it one of the most meaningful times of the year.
