What do you know about the word “meme?” I didn’t know anything until I looked it up. But I had to look it up in the online version of Meriam-Webster because the word doesn’t appear in either of the dictionaries I’ve been depending on (for more than fifty years).
British Scientist Richard Dawkins coined “meme” in 1976. He defined the word as “a unit of cultural transmission.” Cool. These days “meme” most often refers to the captioned graphics we see all over the internet. They run the gamut from hitting your funny bone to immediately hitting your trash can.
Fifteen or more years ago, I paired a few dozen photographs and drawings with quotations from some of my favorite writers and a few of my own thoughts. Here are six of them. Are they memes? I think maybe so. If they appeal to you, you're welcome to share them with proper credit.
