Missouri (sorry, Carolyn) wouldn't be my first choice for a setting (no ocean, no beach!), but frankly, the setting was not all that important to the plot nor the characterization. In New England the sheriff doesn't have nearly as much authority as in other areas, but that's largely the difference between a commonwealth and a state.
