The voice lets itself be known to me. I swear I hear their voice in my head, and I just write their story.<br /><br />For novels, I develop a timeline for the character and his backstory. They change over the timeline. And then their story begins. Of course, the trick is not to write their backstory unless it is needed, giving the reader hints about the character's background. <br /><br />I know my characters, but the process is different in shorts than in novels. I took six months off from my novel because of short story opportunities. Every one got published, I'm happy to say.
