Great Advice

Great Advice

Who says there’s nothing good on television?  If you ignore everything the characters on the programs do, and listen, especially during commercials and cooking shows, you may come away with some excellent advice and insights that not only apply to the products advertised but to the rest of your life. For example…
Do not take Lunesta if you are allergic to anything in it.

Volvo not only competed with Mercedes and Audi, but beat its competitors in

every subjective category.  (emphasis added)

If you experience suicidal thoughts, problems with sleep or depression, tell your

doctor immediately.

Cars are not skateboards. Do not attempt a rail slide in a car. This is fantasy. Cars do

not jump on trains.

From a Recipe for 8-Spice Pork Tenderloin:

Toast the cumin, mustard, fennel, coriander, peppercorns, cloves, bay leafs and cinnamon sticks in a sauté pan over high heat with no oil until they catch on fire and blacken.  When they catch fire, blow it out

What have you seen on television?

  1. Last weekend, when I was visiting relatives (since at home I don't have time for TV), we watched amateur videos for the Superbowl sponsored by Doritos. There are many talented people, unknowns, who do a better job than the professionals. These videos were funny, and they didn't spend much money to make them. I think you can still see them either at the Doritos website or on YouTube. The one, featuring a little girl and her trusty dog, was my favorite.

  2. I only watch a few shows on TV and those with my DVR so I can skip through the commercials. I do watch some football live and must say that being exposed to the same commercials three times in a row does not make me more likely to purchase their product.

One of the shows I watch is "Justified." It makes me feel better when they kill more people in a one-hour episode than I kill in a whole novel.

They had a nice tribute to Elmore Leonard at the beginning of this week's show (the beginning of the new season).

  3. Justified is one of the few shows I watch regularly. I thought the tribute was very well done.

  4. Hi, Warren,

The drug company commercials are disturbing. They're forced to give warning info for their products now. Really, I think we should be informed before deciding whether or not it's advisable to use a particular pharma product. It seems they're are many more dangers than benefits in many cases.

  5. Hi Warren,

Wow, I'm missing a lot since I don't watch commercials. That's the beauty of having a DVR--we can fast forward over the ads. But now I'm wondering what else I'm missing? LOL

  6. Warren, this was funny. I only watch PBS and even then only a few shows maybe once a week. Even PBS now have a short commercial or two between shows, but certainly they never interrupt shows for commercials. I guess I'm missing a lot. But on the other hand when I'm visiting someone who has their TV on, it seems like the programs are interrupted by a lot of loud commercials. A few are funny, but most seem annoying to me.

  7. Hi, Jacqueline,

I don't like the drug commercials on general principles. Why should an ad direct medical care?

  9. I once saw a spoof of a drug commercial in which one of the side effects mentioned by the blithe young announcer was, "...and your first born may look like a collie."

  10. Fun post, Warren! I don't see commercials, except when we eat out and the TV is on in the restaurant (why do they do this?). It seems there are exponentially more commercials all the time and the loudness, oy! The worst thing they ever did was allow pharmaceutical commercials.

  11. I often wonder why any drug company bothers to advertise on TV. After hearing all the warnings, I wouldn't take any of their pills!

  12. Fun blog, Warren! Usually, I fast forward through ads, but I like watching the AT&T commercials where kids answer questions from a serious looking host. Their honest answers and the host's replies make me smile.

  13. It's been a while, but my favorite were the ads for snack products with Olestra. I mean, it's not like some medications where the benefit may outweigh the risk--no one needs snack foods, much less any specific one. Anything including warnings for possible "intestinal slippage" is off my grocery list.
